MICHAEL FREITAS WOOD

Statement 2016

The grid has been a time-honored device used for centuries by artists to transfer or enlarge images.  It has become a staple of contemporary art since Mondrian and more recently with the likes of Agnes Martin.

I continue to use this simple organizational device to map out new terrain for my painting.  In my latest series, the patterns of the microscopic world of atoms as well as the cosmic patterns of the universe are my inspiration.

I use plaster mixed with acrylic pigments, applied by trowel on fiberglass sheets.
